Why page numbering matters — and where it breaks

Every professional PDF — a thesis, a contract, a bound report — needs numbers. Most documents also need them to be invisible on the first page (the cover), printed in a consistent corner, and drawn without smudging existing footers or logos. This tool handles the basic version: it stamps a number or a range (like "5 / 20") into one of six corners, on every page except optionally the cover.

The cover page problem

Numbering in a real document rarely starts flush with page 1. Two separate controls cover it. Skip the first page leaves the cover unstamped. Start numbering at shifts the whole sequence, and the two combine: tick the skip box and set the offset to 0, and a 20-page document reads "1 / 19" on its second page and "19 / 19" on its last. Leave the offset at 1 instead and that same second page reads "2 / 20", which is what you want when the cover is meant to count as page one even though its number is hidden. The offset also handles a volume that continues from another: set it to 47 and the first stamped page reads 47.

Numbers colliding with existing content

The tool places numbers 24 points from the edge of the corner you choose — about a third of an inch. It does not detect whether your PDF already has a footer, page markers, or a logo in that corner. If your document already prints text or images in, say, the bottom-right corner, the number will overlap it. Always test the corner first with a small export. If the number lands on top of existing content, pick a different position — you have six corners to choose from.

How to use it

Upload your PDF, then:

• Style: Pick "3" (plain number) or "3 / 12" (number of total pages).
• Position: Choose one of six corners: top or bottom, plus left, center, or right.
• Size: Drag to set the font size from 8 to 18 points. Numbers are drawn in grey Helvetica.
• Skip cover: Leaves page 1 unstamped.
• Start numbering at: Offsets the sequence. Set it to 0 alongside the skip option to make the second page read 1.

Limits

If your PDF has rotated pages (with a /Rotate entry in its metadata), numbers are drawn in the unrotated coordinate space. This means they may appear along a side edge rather than in the logical corner when the page is viewed rotated. For most documents this never comes up, but it is worth a glance at the output if your source has landscape or rotated pages mixed in.
