About this tool

Remove a password you already know — everything stays in your browser

If you have a PDF that requires a password to open and you know it, this tool strips it off and saves an unlocked copy. Everything runs in your browser — your PDF and password never upload or leave your device.

The output is fully readable with no password protection. You can open, copy, print, and share it without re-entering the password.

This tool removes user passwords, not permission restrictions

A PDF can be locked two ways. A user password encrypts the entire document — without it, you cannot open or read the file at all. An owner password leaves the file readable but restricts printing, copying, and editing. Most "locked" PDFs (bank statements, e-books, reports) use the second kind.

This tool removes the first kind: the encryption sealing the file. You must already be able to open the PDF to use it.

You must know the correct password — this is not a password cracker

To unlock your PDF, enter the current password correctly. If wrong, you will see: "Wrong password, or this PDF isn't encrypted." This tool cannot guess, crack, or bypass passwords. Use it only on documents you own or have permission to unlock — for instance, when your PDF software cannot handle encryption, or to stop typing the same password repeatedly.

Limits: 100 MB maximum file size; no password recovery possible

Your PDF must be under 100 MB. Once unlocked and downloaded, there is no recovery if you forget the original password. Save the original file safely before unlocking a copy. For adding passwords, see Protect PDF. To shrink files before sending, try Compress PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about the Unlock PDF.

How do I remove a password from a PDF I own?

Upload the PDF, enter the password you already know, and click Remove password. The tool will generate an unlocked copy you can download. Everything runs in your browser, so your password never uploads anywhere.

What is the difference between a user password and an owner password?

A user password encrypts the file completely and prevents anyone from opening it without the password. An owner password leaves the file readable but restricts actions like printing or copying. This tool removes user passwords that lock the file; it does not remove permission restrictions.

What happens if I enter the wrong password?

You will see an error message: Wrong password, or this PDF isn't encrypted. This tool cannot crack or guess passwords. You must know the correct password to unlock the file.

Can I use this tool to unlock a PDF without knowing the password?

No. This tool is not a password cracker. It requires you to enter the correct password. If you do not know the password, you cannot use this tool to unlock the file.
