Most "redaction" tools draw a black rectangle over sensitive text — but the original text remains in the PDF file underneath. A text extractor or any PDF tool can recover what you thought you hid. This tool works differently: when you export, pages with redaction boxes are flattened to an image, permanently destroying the original text and graphics. The redacted content is genuinely gone.
How to Redact in Your Browser
Upload a PDF, select the Redact tool (⬛) from the toolbar, and click exactly where sensitive data appears on the page. A black box will appear; drag to resize it. You can place multiple redaction boxes on the same page or across different pages. When you click Download PDF, the tool flattens each redacted page to a JPEG image and embeds it into the output file — the original PDF text underneath is never included in the result. Verify Your Redaction Works
To confirm sensitive text is truly gone, open the redacted PDF and try to select text under a black box — your cursor will pass through the image, not the text. You can also run the output through a text-extraction tool; nothing will come back from the redacted area. This is why redaction only works at export time: the browser copies your original PDF, flattens the redacted pages, and writes the result. Nothing is uploaded or stored.
Real Redaction vs. Cosmetic Coverage
Cosmetic redaction (a rectangle drawn on top) saves space and keeps text searchable on unredacted pages, but it exposes sensitive data to recovery. True redaction requires destroying the text layer itself. This tool does that by converting redacted pages to images — a process called rasterization. The tradeoff is real: a redacted page stops being text and becomes a picture of text, so it is no longer searchable, selectable or editable, and it can be substantially larger than the vector page it replaced.
