Transparency stays intact with PNG

An AVIF file with transparency — soft shadows, feathered edges, anti-aliased text, or any alpha channel at all — keeps every transparent pixel intact when converted to PNG. Converting the same AVIF to JPEG would flatten all of it onto a solid colour, permanently and irreversibly. If your AVIF has any transparency, PNG is the only one of the two targets that preserves it. Because PNG carries an alpha channel natively, this tool's background-colour control is not shown for this conversion — there is nothing to flatten onto.

Editability through lossless conversion

PNG is lossless, so every subsequent save while you work leaves the pixels exactly as they were. That makes it the right intermediate when the file is heading into an editor for cropping, retouching, compositing, or simply being saved repeatedly over a working session. A JPEG intermediate degrades a little on every save, and because each individual step looks fine, the accumulated damage is invisible until you compare against the original.

Choosing between the two AVIF targets

The rule is short enough to act on: choose PNG when the image has transparency or is going to be edited further; choose JPEG when the image is finished, has no transparency, and you want the smallest widely-compatible file. If you need the compatibility case, see AVIF to JPG.

Because PNG is lossless there is nothing for a quality setting to control, so the quality slider does not appear at all for this conversion. Its absence is expected, not a fault.

One expectation to set: a lossless PNG of a photographic image is usually much larger than the AVIF it came from, frequently several times over. Converting to a lossless format never restores detail that AVIF's compression already discarded — it simply stores the current result perfectly. What the re-encode discards

The canvas re-encode drops the colour profile along with all other metadata, and PNG output from this tool is 8 bits per channel. An AVIF authored at greater bit depth or in a wide colour gamut is therefore reduced on the way through, which most often shows as banding in smooth gradients — skies, studio backdrops, soft shadows. If you need the full fidelity of a wide-gamut or high-bit-depth AVIF, this conversion is not the right route and you want software that can carry the profile across.
