The deliberate downgrade: trading a better format for universal reach

AVIF is the more capable format on nearly every technical axis—smaller files, better colour fidelity, superior compression. And you are giving that up on purpose. The reason is reach. JPEG is the most universally readable image format in existence: decades-old software, printers, photo kiosks, hardware picture frames, older phones, embedded viewers, corporate document systems, and essentially every image library ever written can open it. AVIF, being recent, cannot count on any of that outside a modern browser.

When you need JPEG instead

The situations are specific and worth naming, because they are why you are here:

  • An upload form or portal that rejects the file type outright.
  • Sending to someone running older software, where the file will simply refuse to open.
  • Importing into legacy, industrial or corporate document systems that were built before AVIF existed.
  • Submitting to a print service — many still expect JPEG or TIFF.
  • Anything that will pass through a pipeline you do not control and cannot test.

Generation loss and the size paradox

This is a lossy-to-lossy conversion, not a reversible step: the AVIF is decoded to pixels and re-compressed as JPEG. Expect the result to be larger than the AVIF at comparable visual quality, often substantially so, because JPEG is a far older and less efficient codec. That is not a fault in the conversion — it is the whole reason AVIF exists. The tool reports the before and after sizes for every file, so you can see the actual cost on your own images rather than guessing at it.

The quality slider defaults to 92 and runs from 40 to 100. Because you are re-compressing data that has already been compressed once, low settings compound the existing artefacts rather than merely softening detail. For a file you are handing to someone else, staying at or above the default is the safer choice, and the size penalty is the price of the compatibility you came for.

Three things JPEG cannot carry

JPEG has no alpha channel, so any transparency in the source is flattened onto the background colour, which defaults to #ffffff and is configurable. Any bit depth beyond 8 bits per channel is reduced to 8 on re-encode. And the canvas re-encode strips the colour profile entirely, so a wide-gamut source is not carried across — colours can shift, most visibly in strongly saturated areas such as skies and vivid greens. None of these are limitations of this tool; they are built into what JPEG is.

Will my JPEG file be larger than the AVIF I started with?

Almost certainly, and often by a wide margin. AVIF is a far more efficient codec, so re-encoding the same picture with JPEG needs considerably more data to look equivalent. The tool shows the original and new size for each file, so you can see the real difference on your own images. That increase is the cost of compatibility, not a sign anything went wrong.

What happens to transparent parts of my image?

JPEG has no transparency support at all, so transparent areas are filled with a solid colour — white by default, and configurable in Advanced options. If the transparency matters, convert to PNG instead, which keeps the alpha channel intact.

Does the tool keep EXIF data and other metadata?

No. The conversion strips everything: EXIF, ICC colour profiles, GPS coordinates, camera settings and copyright fields. Only the pixels are carried across. That removes location data automatically, which is often welcome, but keep the original if you rely on embedded copyright or capture information.

Why might the colours look slightly different after converting?

Because the colour profile is discarded during the re-encode. An AVIF authored in a wide colour gamut has no profile in the JPEG telling a viewer how to interpret its values, so saturated areas in particular can shift. For colour-critical work, convert with software that can embed an ICC profile.
