Converting to PNG makes files much larger, not better

This is the point that surprises people: converting a WebP to PNG does not improve the image and does not shrink the file. WebP uses some of the most efficient compression available, and PNG's lossless DEFLATE works far less effectively on photographic data. A 300 KB WebP photo can easily become a multi-megabyte PNG. For flat-colour graphics, logos and screenshots the gap is much smaller, because that is the content PNG's compression was designed around — but the file still grows rather than shrinks.

Lossless does not mean it can restore lost quality

"Lossless" describes what a format preserves from the moment it receives an image, not what it can recover. If your source WebP was lossy — as most are, since that is the point of using it — the fine detail is already gone. PNG then stores that result perfectly: every pixel the WebP handed it, and nothing more. You end up with a much bigger file containing exactly the same visual information. Quality is not restored by changing format, and no setting anywhere can change that.

Use PNG for compatibility and editing, not for quality or size

There are two good reasons to make this conversion. The first is compatibility: some software, older tooling, and certain upload or print pipelines still will not accept WebP. The second is editing: PNG is lossless, so a long session of cropping, retouching and repeated saving costs nothing, whereas a lossy intermediate degrades a little with every save.

What is not a good reason is expecting a better-looking or smaller file. Neither will happen.

One thing you will notice: there is no quality slider on this conversion. PNG is lossless, so there is no quality parameter to pass to the encoder, and the tool omits the control entirely rather than showing one that does nothing. Its absence is expected.

Transparency carries over perfectly; metadata does not

PNG supports full 8-bit alpha, so any transparency in your WebP stays exactly as it was. Because PNG has its own alpha channel, the background-colour control used for JPEG conversions is not shown here — there is nothing to flatten onto.
