Downscaling is one-way loss
Shrink a 2000×1500 photograph to 400×300, and you permanently discard 93% of the original pixels. Canvas resampling interpolates the remaining ones, but no interpolation can recover the detail you deleted. If you later enlarge the result back to 2000×1500, you get blurry pixels, not your original image. Export quality—JPEG, WebP, PNG—compounds the loss by throwing away additional information to compress file size.
Fit mode shapes your trade-off
Contain (letterbox) scales down to fit inside your target, leaving empty space filled with a background colour. Cover crops the edges to fill the frame—useful for social feeds where you cannot control what viewers see. Stretch distorts the aspect ratio to match exactly. For square Instagram posts, cover silently crops portrait photos; for logos or graphics, contain plus a white background is safer.
Quality matters only on lossy formats
JPEG and WebP accept a quality slider: 40–100%. The difference between 75% and 85% is often invisible on screen but saves kilobytes, which speeds up upload and load times on slow networks. PNG is lossless—it discards nothing—so the quality control is disabled for PNG. Transparency is preserved for PNG; JPEG and WebP require a background colour to fill transparent areas.
Aspect lock prevents accidental distortion
By default, the aspect ratio is locked: change width to 800, and height scales automatically. Toggle the lock to set arbitrary dimensions. Social-media presets (Instagram square 1080×1080, YouTube thumbnail 1280×720) unlock the aspect to match the exact platform requirement.

What if I need to enlarge a small image?
Canvas scaling upscales using interpolation, which cannot invent lost detail. A 300×300 photo enlarged to 1200×1200 will be soft and blurry. Start with the largest version you have, then scale down if needed rather than up.
Can I change the aspect ratio without distortion?
Yes, using a fit mode. Contain adds padding; Cover crops the edges. Stretch distorts the image to match your target dimensions exactly. Choose based on your content: social feeds often prefer Cover to keep important subjects visible.
Is PNG always lossless?
Yes. This tool exports PNG as lossless, meaning no colour or pixel information is discarded during compression. File size is larger than JPEG or WebP, but quality is perfect. Transparency is preserved for PNG automatically.
What is the maximum file size I can upload?
