Your Animation Won't Survive the Conversion

If you're converting an animated GIF to PNG expecting to keep the animation, stop here. This tool extracts the first frame of your GIF and converts it to a static PNG image. Animation is lost. Animated PNG (APNG) does exist and today’s browsers display it, but this tool does not produce one — it writes a single still frame.

So if the movement is the point, keep the GIF. If you only ever wanted one frame out of it, you are in the right place — and GIF to JPG does the same job when you would rather have a smaller photographic still than a lossless one.

The 256-Color Ceiling: What You're Actually Getting

GIF is limited to a 256-colour palette. When a photo was saved as GIF, everything beyond those 256 colours was discarded and dithered into speckled patterns. When you convert that GIF to PNG, you're converting the already-damaged version. PNG can hold millions of colours, but it can only store what was left after GIF's initial loss.

Your PNG output will look identical to the GIF you started with. It won't become crisper or more colourful. The damage is permanent.

Where PNG Actually Wins: Transparency and Compression

GIF supports only one transparent colour — all-or-nothing. When a GIF sits on a background it wasn't designed for, edges show a jagged, wrong-coloured fringe. PNG supports full alpha transparency, so semi-transparent pixels blend smoothly with any background. If your GIF uses transparency, converting to PNG gives you crisp, smooth edges.

PNG's compression also typically stores flat-colour images more compactly than GIF. For even smaller files, try PNG to WebP.
