Animation does not survive conversion

When you convert an animated GIF to JPEG, the tool decodes the GIF into an image, draws it to a canvas, and re-encodes it. In this process, only the first frame of the animation is visible—the canvas captures a single static image. There is no frame picker and no "export all frames" option.

The first frame of an animated GIF is often a blank, near-blank, or title frame, because animations commonly fade or build up from nothing. So your output is frequently not merely "one frame of the animation" but an apparently empty image. Check the result rather than assume what you got.

If your GIF is animated and you need the motion to survive, JPEG is categorically the wrong target—it has no multi-frame concept at all. Keep the GIF, or convert to a video format (MP4, WebM) elsewhere.

Palette banding and dithering artifacts persist

A GIF holds at most 256 colours from a fixed palette; JPEG is 24-bit (16.7 million colours). Converting does not restore colour that palette quantisation already discarded, so any banding and dithering patterns in the source remain in the output. Worse, JPEG's lossy compression handles hard-edged dithering noise poorly, so a dithered GIF can convert to a JPEG that is both larger and visibly worse than expected.

Transparency flattens onto a solid background

GIF transparency is a single fully-transparent palette index; JPEG has no alpha channel at all. Transparent pixels in your GIF are flattened onto a background colour, which defaults to white (#ffffff) but is fully configurable. If your GIF relies on transparency, the result will be opaque and backed by whatever colour you choose. Note that because GIF transparency is all-or-nothing rather than graded, edges that were anti-aliased against one colour will keep a fringe of that colour against your new background.
