How Pakistan's Progressive Income Tax Works
Pakistan's income tax system uses progressive tax brackets, where each slice of income is taxed at its bracket's rate. The critical misunderstanding: reaching a higher bracket does not tax your entire salary at that rate. Only the money within each bracket is taxed at that bracket's percentage.
Consider someone earning PKR 1,300,000 in the 2024β25 tax year. They do not pay 15% on all income. Instead, they pay nothing on the first 600,000, then 5% on the next 600,000 (Rs 30,000), then 15% only on the final 100,000 (Rs 15,000). Total tax: Rs 45,000βan effective rate of 3.46%, not 15%.
Tax Brackets for Salaried Individuals (2024β25)
| Income Range (PKR) | Marginal Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to 600,000 | 0% |
| 600,001 β 1,200,000 | 5% |
| 1,200,001 β 2,200,000 | 15% |
| 2,200,001 β 3,200,000 | 25% |
| 3,200,001 β 4,100,000 | 30% |
| Above 4,100,000 | 35% |
Effective Rates: Marginal vs. Actual Tax Paid
The marginal rate (your highest bracket) is not the rate you pay on all income. Your effective rate is total tax Γ· total income. Here are three concrete examples:
- PKR 1,300,000: Tax Rs 45,000 β Effective rate 3.46%
- PKR 2,500,000: Tax Rs 255,000 β Effective rate 10.2%
- PKR 4,500,000: Tax Rs 840,000 β Effective rate 18.67%

Frequently asked questions
Common questions about the Income Tax Calculator Pakistan π΅π°.
How much income tax do I pay on a 1 million rupee salary in Pakistan?
On a PKR 1,000,000 salary in the 2024β25 tax year, you pay zero tax on the first 600,000, then 5% on the next 400,000, which equals Rs 20,000. Your total tax liability is Rs 20,000, giving you an effective tax rate of 2%.
What is the income tax free limit in Pakistan for 2024β25?
In Pakistan for 2024β25, salaried individuals earning up to PKR 600,000 per year pay zero income tax. Earnings above PKR 600,000 start to be taxed, with the first 600,000 remaining tax-free and only the excess above that amount subject to 5% tax.
If I cross a tax slab, does my entire salary get taxed at the higher rate?
No. Only the income within each tax slab is taxed at that slab's specific rate. For example, earning PKR 1,300,000 means the 15% tax bracket applies only to the 100,000 above 1.2 million, not to your entire salary. This is why your marginal rate and effective rate are differentβand understanding the difference matters.
What does this calculator not include?
This calculator excludes the Workers Welfare Fund surcharge, tax credits or relief for donations or investments, income tax schedules for non-salaried individuals and businesses, and surcharges. Your actual tax liability may differ. Always verify results with the Federal Board of Revenue or a qualified tax professional before filing your return.
