Personal Relief Is a Tax Credit, Not an Income Deduction
The most common mistake in Kenyan PAYE calculators is treating personal relief as an income deduction. Personal relief of KES 28,800 per year is a credit against tax payable, not a salary deduction. Treating it as an income deduction costs you KES 20,160 more per year at the 30% tax band.
This principle explains why KES 288,000 is a natural tax-free threshold: personal relief of KES 28,800 divided by 10% equals KES 288,000. Anyone earning below that amount pays no PAYE after the relief is applied.
How PAYE Is Calculated in Kenya
Kenya Revenue Authority uses five income bands. Calculate tax on each portion of your salary within its band, then subtract the KES 28,800 personal relief.
| Taxable Income Band | Tax Rate |
|---|---|
| KES 0 to 288,000 | 10% |
| KES 288,001 to 388,000 | 25% |
| KES 388,001 to 6,000,000 | 30% |
| KES 6,000,001 to 9,600,000 | 32.5% |
| Above KES 9,600,000 | 35% |
Worked example: On KES 1,000,000 taxable income: KES 288,000 Γ 10% = KES 28,800; KES 100,000 Γ 25% = KES 25,000; KES 612,000 Γ 30% = KES 183,600. Total before relief is KES 237,400. Subtract KES 28,800 relief for annual PAYE of KES 208,600. The salary calculator includes NSSF, SHIF, and Affordable Housing Levy.
What This Calculator Does Not Include
This tool calculates PAYE tax only. NSSF contributions, SHIF premiums, and Affordable Housing Levy are separate mandatory deductions not included here. Figures should be confirmed with KRA or a tax professional before filing.

Frequently asked questions
Common questions about the Income Tax Calculator Kenya π°πͺ.
How is PAYE calculated in Kenya?
Kenya uses five progressive tax bands ranging from 10% to 35%. You calculate tax on each portion of your income within each band, add them up, then subtract the personal relief of KES 28,800 from the total. This calculator applies the KRA rates automatically.
What is personal relief and how does it work?
Personal relief is a tax credit of KES 28,800 per year that reduces the PAYE you owe. It is NOT a deduction from your salary. You calculate tax on your full income, then subtract the relief from the tax bill. This differs from calculators that incorrectly treat it as a salary deduction.
How much tax would I pay on a KES 100,000 salary?
On KES 100,000 taxable income, all falls in the first 10% band, giving tax of KES 10,000. Subtract personal relief of KES 28,800, and your tax is zero because the relief exceeds the tax. This is why anyone earning below roughly KES 288,000 typically pays no PAYE.
What deductions are not included in this calculator?
This calculator computes PAYE tax only. It excludes NSSF contributions, SHIF health insurance premiums, and the Affordable Housing Levyβall separate mandatory deductions that reduce your take-home pay. Use the salary calculator to see the complete deduction picture.
