"Business days" is ambiguous in three separate ways

Contracts lean on the phrase constantly — payment within 10 business days, respond within 5. The trouble is that it contains three independent ambiguities, none of them settled by universal convention, and they compound over longer periods.

One: does the start day count?

This calculator counts it. Monday to Wednesday is 3 business days here, not 2.

Many legal and commercial traditions do the opposite, counting forward from the next business day. The difference is not cosmetic — take "5 business days from Monday":

• Inclusive (this tool): Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday — the deadline is Friday of the same week.
• Exclusive: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, then Monday — the deadline is the following Monday.

Two: which days are non-working?

This calculator treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend, with no option to change it. That is standard in Western business and not universal — much of the Middle East observes a Friday and Saturday weekend instead, and other patterns exist.

A deadline calculated on the wrong weekend convention is simply wrong for that counterparty, and the error is invisible to both sides until it is missed.

Three: public holidays

The tool does not know any holidays. You enter a count of how many fall in your range, and it subtracts them. It has no calendar, no country setting, and no awareness of Christmas, Eid, Diwali or anything else.

This is worth stating plainly because it is where the real damage happens. Holidays vary by country, by region within a country, and by year — some move with the calendar and some are declared at short notice. A business-day count that ignores them will overstate what is achievable around exactly the periods when deadlines are most likely to slip.

Note also that if you enter more holidays than there are weekdays in the range, the result shows zero rather than a negative number. That is sensible arithmetic but a meaningless answer, so treat a zero as a signal to check the input.

The practical conclusion: state the actual date

Because all three are open, "within 10 business days" is underspecified in an agreement unless it also fixes the counting convention, the applicable weekend, and whose holiday calendar governs. Well-drafted contracts define "business day" explicitly for precisely this reason.

Where you can, write the date. "By 14 March" cannot be misread; "within 10 business days" can be read several ways by both parties acting entirely in good faith. And the divergence grows with the span — over a few days the conventions rarely differ much, but across several weeks the combination of endpoint handling and unaccounted holidays can move a deadline by a week or more.
