Why journaling matters more than anything
If you don't track your trades, you don't actually know whether you have an edge. Your memory will lie — it remembers the winners and forgets the losers. A journal turns “I think this strategy works” into “I have a 56% win rate with 1.8R average winner and +0.12R expectancy across 142 trades.” That's the difference between a trader and a gambler.
What this journal calculates
Win rate: % of trades that closed positive. Expectancy: average $ per trade across wins and losses combined — the single most important number. If expectancy is negative, your system loses money long-term no matter how it feels. Profit factor: gross winnings ÷ gross losings. Above 1.5 is solid; above 2.0 is excellent. Avg W : L ratio: ratio of avg winner to avg loser. Most profitable systems have this above 1.5 even with mediocre win rates.
