The obvious function is ending a deadlock. For a genuinely close decision the deliberation has usually stopped producing information: you are turning the same considerations over without new input, and the cost of continuing has passed the difference between the options. A random pick ends that.
But the more interesting function is the test it provides. See the result and notice what you feel.
- Relief means the options really were equivalent, and any of them would have done. The decision was never the problem.
- Resistance means you had a preference you had not admitted to yourself. That is real information, and the deliberation was not surfacing it.
This works because the choice was arbitrary. A recommendation from a person or a system invites you to evaluate its reasoning, which is another round of the same thinking. A coin has no reasoning to argue with, so there is nothing to attend to except your own reaction — which is the thing you were trying to find out.
Where it is the wrong tool
Three cases, and they matter:
- The options differ in consequence. Then it is not a close decision, it is a decision you are avoiding.
- It is expensive to reverse. Randomness is cheap when being wrong is cheap.
