KML to GPX Converter: Google Earth & My Maps to Your GPS
Convert KML or KMZ from Google Earth or My Maps to GPX for Garmin and GPS apps. Placemarks become waypoints, paths become tracks. Nothing is uploaded.
Drop your KML file
GPX, KML, KMZ and GeoJSON are all accepted, and several files at once merge into one. The file is read in your browser and never uploaded, which matters with GPS tracks: most of them start at someone's front door.

This tool keeps working with no connection at all, because your file is processed here in the browser. A site that uploads your file cannot do that. Disconnect and try it — this box will notice.

This KML to GPX converter takes a route you drew in Google Earth or Google My Maps and turns it into a GPX file that a Garmin, a phone app such as Gaia GPS, OsmAnd or Komoot, or a bike computer can follow. Drop a .kml or .kmz above and download the .gpx. Nothing leaves your browser.
Getting a route out of Google My Maps
In My Maps, open the menu next to the map's title and choose Export to KML/KMZ. Pick the layer you want and tick the option to export a .KML file instead of KMZ, or keep the KMZ and drop it in here as it is. Leave the network link option unticked. With it ticked, the export holds only a link back to Google and none of the route, and this converter will tell you it found a network link and nothing else.
How each KML shape lands in the GPX
| In the KML | In the GPX |
|---|---|
| Placemark with a Point | <wpt> waypoint with its name and description |
| Path (LineString) | <trk> track with one segment |
| MultiGeometry with several paths | One <trk> with a <trkseg> per path |
| Timed gx:Track from Google Earth | <trk> with a <time> on every point |
| Polygon (an area) | A closed track along the outline. GPX has no area type, so inner holes are left out and you are told |
| Image overlays, 3D models, network links | Skipped, with a count of each in a note |
| Line colour and width | Not stored. GPX has no styling and every app draws tracks its own way |
Track or route?
GPX has two kinds of line. A track is a breadcrumb trail that the device draws and lets you follow exactly. A route is a short list of turn points that the device navigates between and may recalculate along roads. A path drawn in Google Earth contains every bend, so this converter writes tracks, which every GPS app imports. If your Garmin needs a course, import the GPX into Garmin Connect as a course, or convert the track to a route in BaseCamp.
No invented elevations
Google Earth writes an altitude of 0 on every point of a path drawn on the ground. That 0 is a placeholder meaning "sit on the terrain", not a height. A converter that copies it into the GPX as <ele>0</ele> tells your GPS the route runs at sea level, and the elevation profile, the total climb and the time estimate all come out wrong. This converter writes elevations only for lines that carry real heights, such as a recorded drive or a flight, so apps that know the terrain can draw the profile themselves.
Worked example
Try an example loads a KML of the Triund trail sketch with a campsite meadow drawn as an area. Converted to GPX it gives two <wpt> waypoints, the timed ascent as a <trk> whose 10 points keep their times and their elevations of 2,130 to 2,842 m, and the meadow as a closed track of 5 points: its 4 corners plus the first one repeated. The meadow was drawn at ground level, so its points get no <ele> at all, and a note above the download explains that GPX cannot hold areas.
Need the reverse? Use GPX to KML. For a table of every coordinate, use KML to CSV, and for web maps, KML to GeoJSON.
How to use the KML to GPX Converter

Frequently asked questions
Common questions about the KML to GPX Converter.
How do I put a Google My Maps route on my Garmin?
Export the layer from My Maps as KML or KMZ with the network link option unticked, convert it here to GPX, then import the GPX into Garmin Connect as a course. You can also copy it onto the device over USB: the folder is Garmin/NewFiles on Edge bike computers and Garmin/GPX on most handhelds.
Why does my converted GPX have no elevation?
Because the KML had none. Paths drawn in Google Earth or My Maps carry an altitude of 0 as a placeholder, and writing that as a real elevation would put your route at sea level. Most GPS apps draw the elevation profile from their own terrain data when the GPX has no elevation values.
Does KML to GPX convert polygons?
GPX cannot store an area, so each polygon becomes a closed track along its outline, which a GPS can still show and follow. Inner holes are left out, and the converter says so before you download.
Can I convert a KMZ file to GPX?
Yes. Drop the .kmz in directly. The KML inside is unzipped in your browser and converted the same way.
Will the line colours from Google Earth carry over?
No. GPX has no styling, so every app draws tracks in its own colours. If you need the colours, convert to GeoJSON instead, which keeps them as stroke and fill properties.
