Frequently asked questions

Common questions about the Currency Converter.

Where do the exchange rates come from?

Rates are sourced from the European Central Bank, which publishes reference rates for major currencies.

Are the rates live and how often do they update?

They reflect the ECB's published reference rates, which are issued on business days. They are reference figures, not the exact rate a bank or card will give you at the moment of a transaction.

Why is the converted amount different from what my bank charges?

Banks and card networks add a margin or fee on top of the reference rate, so a real transaction usually costs a little more than the mid-market figure shown here.

How many currencies can I convert between?

You can convert across 20+ major world currencies.

Does it handle weekend rates?

The ECB does not publish new reference rates on weekends or holidays, so over those days you will see the most recent published rate carried forward.
