Percent and percentage point are not the same unit

When an interest rate moves from 4% to 5%, that is a rise of one percentage point and also a rise of 25 percent. Both describe the same change and both are correct — 5 ÷ 4 − 1 = 0.25.

Which is why "rates rose 25%" and "rates rose 1%" are both defensible descriptions of one event, creating wildly different impressions. The ambiguity is routinely exploited in headlines and political claims, and the defence is simply knowing which unit is being used.

A second case where it matters more: a conversion rate moving from 2% to 3% is one percentage point and a 50% relative improvement3 ÷ 2 − 1 = 0.5. A marketing team quotes the 50; an analyst writes the percentage point. Neither is lying.

A 50% fall needs a 100% rise to recover

Start at 100. Fall 50% and you have 50. Returning to 100 requires a 100% rise, not 50%, because the second percentage applies to a smaller base.

The consequence is that percentage changes cannot be averaged. An investment that rises 50% then falls 50% has an average change of zero and an actual result of 100 × 1.5 × 0.5 = 75 — a 25% loss. Always compute from the real start to the real end rather than averaging the steps.

The base is everything

The same asymmetry produces a smaller, sneakier version: a 10% increase followed by a 10% decrease leaves 99, not 100, since 100 × 1.1 × 0.9 = 99. The decrease applies to a larger base than the increase did.

Reverse percentages

This is where people go wrong most often. If a price after a 20% discount is 80, the original is not 80 plus 20% — that gives 96, and it is wrong because the 20% was a share of the original, not of the reduced price.

Divide by the remainder instead: 80 ÷ 0.8 = 100. The same rule strips tax from a tax-inclusive price — divide by 1 plus the rate, never subtract the percentage.

What is the difference between a percent and a percentage point?

A percentage point is the plain difference between two percentages; a percent is relative to a base. Rates moving from 4% to 5% is one percentage point and also a 25% relative rise, since 5 is 25% more than 4. Use percentage points when comparing two rates directly, and percent when describing how much something changed relative to where it started.

How do I find the original price from a discounted one?

Divide by the remainder, do not add the percentage back. A price of 80 after a 20% discount means 80 represents 80% of the original, so the original is 80 divided by 0.8, which is 100. Adding 20% to 80 gives 96 and is wrong, because the discount was a share of the original rather than of the reduced price. The same rule removes tax from a tax-inclusive figure.

Why does a 50 percent loss need a 100 percent gain to recover?

Because the two percentages apply to different bases. Falling 50% from 100 leaves 50, and getting back to 100 from 50 means doubling — a 100% rise. This asymmetry is why a 50% gain followed by a 50% loss leaves you at 75 rather than back where you started.

Can I average percentage changes across periods?

No, it produces a meaningless number because each change applies to a different base. A 50% rise then a 50% fall averages to zero while the real outcome is a 25% loss. Always calculate from the actual starting value to the actual ending value instead of averaging the intermediate percentages.

Why does the calculator sometimes show nothing?

Because the calculation would divide by zero, or an input is empty or not a number. Percentage change starting from zero is undefined — there is no meaningful answer to how much something grew from nothing — so the tool leaves the result blank rather than displaying a misleading figure.
